No go on you won't, in fact I bet you can't even guess what surprising mystery event has occurred here! *Cue drum roll*.................................one of the chickens has laid an egg! It's amazing, a real egg, I'd almost forgotten what a proper egg looks like it's been so long since I've seen one. I was actually thinking of putting up photos of eggs in the nest boxes just to remind the hens what these facilities are provided for, and it's not to lounge about asleep in at night! In fact the news gets even better, we had one big egg and two small bantam eggs, so I've almost got half an omelette there! I'm not entirely sure what's prompted this resurgence, ok trickle, of egg laying. Actually I'm wondering if rumours have got around that I was spotted stuffing my face with a sausage roll last week, so now maybe the hens don't feel quite as safe as they once did! I absolutely sure they didn't sneak out to Tesco's and buy it as it hasn't got one of those red date stamps on it. As a reward they had a big plate of fruity scones this morning, obviously I'm hoping to bribe them into laying the other half of the omelette later.
I haven't eaten an egg for months now as I won't buy them from the shops. To be honest nothing compares to a proper home laid egg, shop ones always look insipid and taste of nothing, once you've had a proper tasty egg there's no going back I'm afraid. Even the "free range" eggs don't taste of much, I suspect the hens don't have a lavish diet of windfall fruit, insects and chocolate digestives that mine do. My only minor complaint is that quite often when a hen comes back into lay you get the odd double yolker, these are generally much bigger than a normal egg and are carefully put to one side for me as a perk of the job. Unfortunately none of these look like double yolkers, however I'm not going to complain. Cheese omelette, bring it on girls!

One of the farms I buy from at the farmers' market will be getting their new birds in a few weeks and when they come into lay they also have a lot of double yolked eggs to start off. Like your birds, they are running about in a big field and get all the bugs and beasties to eat as well as the corn and wheat. Their eggs are also tasty and have very good coloured yolks like the ones you used to give me. At least I know that they are very free range because the lady has a photograph of herself with her hens on the front of her stall. Happy hens lay lovely eggs! :)
I bet they don't get Stollen and fruit scone though, therein lies the difference! ;)
Hi Emma!
Congrats on your surprise!
Are you going to add to your laying hen stock this year?
My granny's favorite were the Rhode Island Reds.
Hi Robin!
No I won't be adding to my laying stock this year. What I'm planning to do is run then down and eventually look to rescue some battery hens and give them a nice life.
Rhode Island Reds are also one of my favourites :)
Yay! Congrats on the eggs!! I wonder if putting fake wooden eggs in the nests would help them remember to lay regularly . . . might be worth a try. I hope you enjoyed your omelette. And I agree there is nothing like a farm fresh egg. The ones at the store have no flavor at all!
